surgery complete
Gator is out of surgery:) 3+ hours!! His rear left leg is no longer and soon the pain will fade:) We are told he did well and may come home tomorrow:) They felt it would be best if we stayed away this evening as to not excite him, boy that’s alot to ask!! But whatever is best for our angel! Hurley & Charlie have never been away from him this long and keep pacing the floors with us:) We all can’t wait to bring him home and tell him how much we love him:) Lets keep our fingers crossed and say a prayer that Gator will be home tomorrow morning having bacon, eggs and grits(yes:) grits) we live in the south:)) with his family:) Love & licks:)
ps… any tips or advise on making his return home as easy for him as we can would be so welcome:)
hooray for Gator being out of surgery! That’s a stressful wait.
You mentioned in your other post you had another dog that had OSA – (first of all – how awful to have to go through this twice! So sorry to hear that) but did your other dog go through an amp as well? If so, I suppose you know to expect that Gator won’t be himself for a couple of weeks. Once he is off the meds and gets his staples out he’ll be back to his old self!
Be sure to come to the forums if you have questions -more people tend to see the posts there and you might get more folks chiming in.
Welcome to the site that nobody wants to join but everyone is glad they did!

Yea out of surgery! My pug Maggie was a left rear amp, but she had mast cell cancer not OSA. I did not go visit Maggie either- I didn’t want to get her hopes up that she was going home with me- also I think it would have been really hard to leave her again. There are different opinions on this- do what you think is right.
As far as advice- I would point back to the forums again. We have something called the required reading list- a compilation of info on what to expect during recovery and treatment. Here is a link: https://tripawds.com/2010/06/01/first-tripawds-required-reading-list/
Be warned that the first couple of weeks after surgery can be really hard- our pups are not themselves. Hopefully Gator sails through but don’t get discouraged if he has some down time.

So glad to hear Gator’s surgery went well! Now, just a few more hours, and he’ll be home with his family where he belongs. Our vet did the same thing to us: Max had his surgery on a Sunday, and we weren’t allowed to visit him until Monday morning. It’ll be a long night for you guys, but get a lot of sleep; you may not get much sleep in the next couple of weeks, so make the most of tonight. Keep us updated on Gator’s progress!

Another left rear amp! Tate’s one, too.
Well you are crossing all the difficult milestones one at a time so good for you! Give yourselves a well-deserved pat on the back. There’s nothing easy about this path, that’s why we’re here!
I would just say follow your instincts. Give Gator lots of reassurance and lots of quiet time, he may not be sociable for awhile. He may not be himself for awhile, which is hard to take but no worries – he just needs time. to heal and figure this out.
And of course, there is no question too small or seemingly stupid. Hit the forums as much as you need to, we love to answer questions.
Welcome Gator! Can’t wait to see pictures!

Great to hear! Go Gator! Where in the south are you? And we love cheesy grits too.
Oh, as for tips for making his recovery smooth…do check out our Required Reading List and ebook, Three Legs & a Spare, which is available on the main Tripawds website. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Rio’s a left rear amp as well, although (same as Maggie the pug) we’re here because of Mast Cell cancer. Rio is also German Shepard/Whippet mix, so I’m particularly anxious to see pics of your boy to see if he looks at all like my Woo.
These next few weeks will be fairly stressful, and we’re here if you have questions. Good luck to you and your family. Keep us posted on Gator’s progress. And pictures, we need pictures.
